Legionella

Legionella bacteria, the cause of Legionnaire’s disease (a deadly pneumonia), aren’t just an historical problem—cases are on the rise in the US and around the world.

From Science News, Sept. 7, 2015: This summer, in New York City’s worst ever outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, left 12 dead and at least 100 infected. In two different outbreaks in an Illinois town in recent days at least 50 people have been diagnosed with the disease and 8 reported dead. Also in a California prison, 95 inmates are being watched, being suspected of being infected and six inmates were already confirmed to have contracted the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), and World Health Organization (WHO) have guidelines for detection, prevention, remediation, and treatment of Legionella. The release of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015 and VHA Directive 1061 provide guidance for establishing a Water Management Program.

Abraxis is pleased to distribute Legipid® from Biotica, the only Legionella rapid detection system that quantitatively measures viable Legionella in water samples (from cooling towers, evaporative condensers, spas, pools, showers, sprinkler systems, surface water, etc.). It is an Immunomagnetic Separation Capture Enzyme Immunoassay (IMS-CEIA) format that is easy to use and AOAC certified. Legipid is a screening kit for fast, accurate, quantitative results that allow rapid action while awaiting confirmation by the much slower standardized culture methods (e.g. ISO 11731:1998).
